Burlen Engineering Services

Burlen combines design, prototyping, machining, fabrication, finishing, inspection, assembly and packaging, all in-house in our Salisbury factory. We support product development and repeatable production of components and assemblies within one in-house process. Read below to find out what we can do for you, from early concept and development through to finished production components.

Concept, Design & Reverse Engineering

CAD  •  3D scanning  •  Feasibility  •  FEA  •  Costing

Develop CAD concepts, assess feasibility and plan manufacturing routes and costs. Use FEA to support design checks and 3D scanning to capture existing part geometry for reverse engineering.

Prototype Development & Testing

3D printing  •  Machined prototypes  •  Fit, form & function

Produce 3D-printed and machined prototypes to check fit, form & function and manufacturability. Use the findings to refine the design before production.

CNC Machining

CNC milling  •  5-axis milling  •  CNC turning  •  Automated loading

Machine prototype and production components with CNC milling and turning. Selected machines have simultaneous 5-axis milling, Renishaw in-cycle probing and automated loading for repeatable production.

Fabrication & Sheet Metal

MIG/TIG & stud welding  •  Laser & guillotine cutting  •  Pressing  •  Punching  •  Folding  •  Forming

Cut, weld, press, punch and fold sheet-metal parts and assemblies. Manual forming includes English wheeling, shrinking and stretching, and tube bending.

Additive & Digital Manufacturing

Resin  •  SLS  •  FDM  •  Laser marking  •  Engraving  •  UV printing

Produce 3D-printed models, functional prototypes and production parts. Laser marking and engraving add serial numbers, QR codes and logos; UV printing adds colour and textured finishes directly to components.

Surface Finishing

Blasting  •  Deburring  •  Polishing  •  Washing  •  Drying

Remove surface contamination and burrs, smooth edges and polish components using blast cleaning and vibratory finishing. Heated washing cleaner and controlled drying.

Inspection, Assembly & Release

Pre-inspection  •  Assembly  •  Final inspection   •  Packaging & delivery

Inspect components before finishing, complete the required assembly and carry out final inspection before packaging and delivery.

Complete In-house Process

Concept & design  →  Prototyping  →  Manufacture  →  Pre-inspection  →  Finishing  →  Assembly  →  Final inspection  →  Packaging  →  Delivery

The route is selected to suit each part, combining the required design, manufacturing, finishing and inspection stages.
